La UNIA presenta mañana lunes el Retrato de Antonio Machado, del pintor Alejandro Cabeza

El acto abre la X Semana Machadiana y participan el artista, la alcaldesa de Baeza y la vicerrectora del Campus Antonio Machado

14 de febrero de 2016. El Campus Antonio Machado de Baeza (Jaén) de la Universidad Internacional de Andalucía (UNIA) presenta mañana lunes, 15 de febrero, a las 12.00 horas, en el Salón de Actos, el Retrato de Antonio Machado, obra del pintor Alejandro Cabeza.

La presentación abre la programación de la X Semana Machadiana, que se celebra del 15 al 22 de febrero (77 aniversario de la muerte del poeta), y en la que la UNIA participa con la organización de cuatros actividades.

Participarán en la misma el autor del retrato, la alcaldesa de Baeza, Lola Marín, y la vicerrectora del Campus, Yolanda de la Fuente.

Alejandro Cabeza nació en Barcelona en 1971. Sus obras están integradas en las colecciones permanentes de: Museo Vicente Blasco Ibáñez de Valencia, Museo Nacional del Teatro, Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Museo Nacional de Arte Romano de Mérida, Museo Provincial de Cáceres, Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes de Badajoz, Museo de Aeronáutica y Astronáutica de Madrid, Museo Marítimo de Asturias... Dos retratos suyos de Alejo Carpentier y Nicolás Guillén pertenecen a la Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba. Otras de sus obras son patrimonio de instituciones finlandesas. Su retrato de Ana María Matute permanece expuesto en la sede principal de la Real Academia Española en Madrid. Uno de sus retratos de Antonio Machado pertenece a la Casa Museo del autor en Segovia (por la que vela la Real Academia de San Quirce). Un retrato de Miguel de Unamuno de su autoría pertenece a la Universidad de Salamanca y descansa en la Casa Museo del autor. Uno de sus retratos de Gabriel y Galán forma parte de la colección de la Casa Museo del autor en Guijo de Granadilla (Cáceres). Su retrato del poeta Antonio Carvajal es patrimonio de la Academia de Buenas Letras de Granada. Su retrato de Mario Vargas Llosa pertenece a la Universidad de Burgos. Sendos retratos de Miguel de Cervantes de su autoría descansan en el Museo-Casa de Cervantes de Esquivias (Toledo) y en el Museo Casa Natal de Cervantes de Alcalá de Henares. Otras obras suyas se encuentran en proceso de incorporación a las colecciones permanentes de instituciones como el Museo Casa Molino Ángel Ganivet de Granada o la Fundación Max Aub. Licenciado en 1993, el crítico de arte Francisco Agramunt lo incluyó en su Diccionario de Artistas Valencianos del siglo XX (1999) y en Artistas Valencianos del Siglo XX (2000). Lorenzo Berenguer lo incluyó en Artistas Valencianos Contemporáneos (1997) y en Artistas que dejan huella (2000). En 2001 la Diputación de Valencia publicó su libro de paisajes Luz Valenciana.

IRELAND´S CULTURAL RELATIONS- SPAIN

THE SPANISH Cultural Institute is less than one year old: it was founded in July 1971 with Señor José Antonio Sierra as its first director. Much of its programme is still in the formative stage but, at the same time, a great deal has been planned and some of it is now taking shape. 

    The library is not due to open for another two months but already 4,000 volumes have been collected in the institute´s headquarters at 58 Northumberland Road, Dublin 4. Books on literature and the fine arts abound, naturally, but there are also works on economics, engineering and science, farming and sociology. The director intends to add a substantial number of books in English in order to reach a wider cross section of the Irish public than merely those who can read Spanish.

    Spanish is the second foreign language being taught in Irish schools, with 247 secondary schools having courses on the syllabus, and there are approximately 15,000 students at all levels. In Spain the teaching of English has recently been started in primary schools, so that now over five million children are learning English. This will provide great opportunities for Irish teachers with a knowledge of Spanish. A scheme is now in the pipeline that will give about 200 Irish teachers of Spanish a working holiday during the summer in Spain. They will confer - at holiday resorts - with their Spanish colleagues on teaching methods and the use of audio-visual aids, etc.

LATIN AMERICA

    There are about thirty-five cultural institutes all over the world, under the direction of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Madrid. Many of these are in South America. A legacy from the days of Spanish exploration and the conquest are the strong links between Latin America and the mother country. Spaniards enjoy dual citizenship with 12 Latin American nations.

    Señor Sierra emphasises that the institute in Dublin exists not only to bring a knowledge of Spain but also the culture of the Latin America spanish speking countries.. Already among the 360 records available for lending to members are representative artists of countries south of Caribbean, Latin-American poets and novelists will be found in the library and naturally, films showing colourful aspects of life in the Spanish-speaking tropics may tempt the Irish tourists to venture a little further than the Costa Brava. 

    It would be difficult for any Dubliner not to notice the Spanish schoolchildren who visit here during the summer. As many as five thousand come here and stay with private families. As part of an exchange scheme the Institute helps to promote Irish pupils have the opportunity to stay in Spain. At present there is no scholarship system operating for Irish students to study at Spanish universities, but there is an arrangement with the Irish Government to provide grants for the exchange of two from each country to spand a year in each other´s land. These grants are not confined to students but could apply to graduates of any profession. It is hoped that this number will be increased by a mutual agreement between the two Governments who provide the necessary finance and facilities.

Broad scope

    The Dublin Instite enjoys a great deal of autonomy, which means that the director is largely responsible for his programme of activities. This is in contrast to the Goethe Institute, for example, where Dublin is part of a world-wide network of concerts, lectures and theatrical activities planned in Munich. The director of the Spanish Institute can, therefore, orient his programme to what considers to be the special needs of the Irish people.

    It is far too early to discern any trends that distinguish the policy of this Institute from the others but it is already evident that the intention is to present a programme broad, even popular, in its scope. It is not planned to appeal only to the intellectuals or to those with a knowledge of the language. Films on sport, including bullfighting, will be shown. Since the success of the movie "Man of La Mancha" the exploits of Don Quixote have become familiar to many who never heard of Cervantes. This month the Institute will devote a week to La Mancha and its most noted citizen. 

    Before the Institute was founded here there was already a Dublin Spanish Society, a purely private body operating in Dublin and in other towns. Naturally the Institute assumed many of its functions. Señor Sierra plans to open branches down the country and they are already closely co-operating whith the Spanish Circle in Cork. 

    The Institute, in order to implement the policy of reaching the man in the street, is contacting clubs, associations and Government institutions offering their services and asking how they may best serve the Irish community. However the limiting factor is, as always, money. The operating budget is only 16,000 pounds (out of which the rent of the premises must be paid) and there are only 350 members, mostly language students, who pay two pounds a year.

Strong links

    Yet a full programme of events is scheduled. There will be concerts, lectures, film shows, conferences and dance groups. In cooperation with the Spanish Tourist Board, the famous guitarist Ismael will play and recite his poetry in the Royal Dublin Society on the 27th and 28th of this month. Non-members are welcome.

    Dispite the fact that Spain is not in  the E.E.C., there are strong historical connections between Ireland and Spain and the director hopes that his programme will strengthen the ties between the two countries.

Del 13 al 15 de novembre se’n celebra la 61ena edició a la Universitat de Glasgow

 

La conferència anual de l’Anglo-Catalan Society recupera la figura de Manuel de Pedrolo

 

La Universitat de Glasgow acull entre els propers divendres i diumenge l’Anglo-Catalan Society Anual Conference, el col·loqui sobre cultura catalana que se celebra anualment al Regne Unit. El programa d’aquesta edició, la 61ena, abraça una àmplia diversitat temàtica, amb especial atenció a la literatura, la lingüística i la sociologia catalanes, i té l’escriptor Manuel de Pedrolo com a figura principal.

 

La conferència central del congrés d’aquest any, la ‘Joan Gili Memorial Lecture’ -en honor a qui va ser un dels fundadors i president de l’Anglo-Catalan Society fa més de 50 anys- porta per nom ‘Manuel de Pedrolo i el Mecanoscrit, una frontissa de la ciència-ficció catalana’, i anirà a càrrec de l’escriptor Antoni Munné-Jordà. A més, el professor Pedro Fernández, de la Universitat de Cork, presentarà la seva iniciativa col·laborativa per digitalitzar les obres completes de Pedrolo.

 

En els tres dies que dura l’Anglo-Catalan Society Annual Conference hi haurà gairebé una cinquantena d’actes, la gran majoria conferències breus per part de professors i investigadors de diferents universitats de Catalunya o del Regne Unit, sobre diverses temàtiques com Women’s writing: influences and tradition, Representations of the city o Reinventing/discovering identities in Catalan literature. Un altre dels actes centrals de les jornades, el recital de poesia ‘RIMAT’ (Readings in Memory of Arthur Terry), que tancarà el col·loqui, anirà a càrrec de l’escriptor Jordi Larios.

 

L’Anglo-Catalan Society va ser fundada el 1954 a Oxford i té com a objectiu promoure el coneixement i l’apreciació de la cultura catalana a les Illes Britàniques, així com fomentar les relacions culturals entre les dues comunitats. Si bé actua com un fòrum professional per a les persones implicades en els estudis catalans, l’associació està oberta a totes les persones que en comparteixen els objectius fonamentals.

Proyecto Lengua y Prensa: Una hemeroteca virtual gratuita

 

Lengua y Prensa es un proyecto que aborda la lengua española como noticia. El proyecto está liderado por Francisco Carriscondo y Susana Guerrero, dos profesores de la Universidad de Málaga. La finalidad del proyecto es la recogida de noticias sobre divulgación lingüística, el español y sus variedades; y el análisis de dichas noticias por parte de la comunidad investigadora.

            Las noticias se incluyen en la Hemeroteca Lingüística Virtual, donde se llevan recopiladas hasta la fecha más de 12 000 noticias, recogidas de distintos medios de comunicación, especialmente de la prensa escrita. Ello supone que dicha Hemeroteca se haya convertido en el principal portal difusor de noticias sobre las lenguas de España y sus variedades en Internet. Las noticias aparecen etiquetadas, a fin de posibilitar consultas sobre los temas lingüísticos más diversos, que tienen que ver, por ejemplo, con la política lingüística, o con los conflictos entre el español y el resto de lenguas de España, o con las relaciones entre lengua y cultura (hasta 17 000 etiquetas distintas pueden encontrarse en la Hemeroteca).

            Este corpus supone, además, un excelente punto de partida para cualquier análisis del contenido de las noticias. Hasta la fecha el proyecto cuenta con tres publicaciones principales: dos monografías editadas por Academia del Hispanismo (La lengua en el candelero [2014] y Asedios políticos a las lenguas desde los medios [2015]) y el folleto El proyecto Lengua y Prensa (2015), editado con la Fundéu y la Fundación Alonso Quijano para el Fomento de la Lectura.

Days of Dead at de British Museun

A free festival of art, performance, storytelling and talks at the British Museum to celebrate the Mexican tradition of Day of the Dead, 30 October - 2 November, supported by BP and in association with the Government of Mexico as part of 2015: Year of Mexico in the UK.

 

Throughout the festival the Museum will be elaborately decorated with art installations by Mexican artists with a focus on the Great Court and the Forecourt. One of the major artworks will be by Mexican artist Betsabeé Romero who will create a spectacular art intervention based on a Day of the Dead altar. Betsabeé will suspend a series of hot air balloon style tissue paper skulls and metal skeletons from the ceiling of the Great Court, as well as hanging banners from the drum of the Round Reading Room and decorating the stairs with 'serpents' of tissue paper marigolds.
